Frequently asked questions about tax codes

What tax code should I use if I get NZ Super?

As a general guideline:

  • If NZ Super is your main source of income, use the `M' tax code
  • If you have another main source of income, the secondary or `S' tax code may be more applicable
  • If you have other income you can also use Special tax codes (you need to apply to Inland Revenue for a special tax code)

Get more information about tax codes on the Inland Revenue website (Note: Senior Services is unable to provide tax advice)

You can change your tax code at any time. Complete an IR330 form, scan and email to or mail this to Senior Services at Ministry of Social Development, PO Box 5645, Wellington 6145.
