Frequently asked questions about tax codes

What tax code should I use if I get NZ Super?

As a general guideline:

  • If NZ Super is your main source of income, use the `M' tax code
  • If you have another main source of income, the secondary or `S' tax code may be more applicable
  • If you have other income you can also use Special tax codes (you need to apply to Inland Revenue for a special tax code)

Get more information about tax codes on the Inland Revenue website (Note: Senior Services is unable to provide tax advice)

How do I change my tax code for NZ Super?

You can change your tax code at any time. Complete an IR330 form, scan and email to Seniors@msd.govt.nz or mail this to Senior Services at Ministry of Social Development, PO Box 5645, Wellington 6145.

To get the form, go to the Inland Revenue website at www.ird.govt.nz and enter IR330 into the search box.

Extra support if you're caring for someone else's child

There is a range of financial assistance available if you are caring for a child when the child’s parents are unable to do so.

From August 2014, this includes the Extraordinary Care Fund, to help support children who are showing promise in a particular area or experiencing difficulties that are significantly impacting on their development.

Protect your future - set up an Enduring Power of Attorney

The Office for Senior Citizens is running a public information campaign encouraging people to set up an enduring power of attorney (EPA).

An EPA is a legal document that protects your future because you have chosen who to trust to make decisions for you, if you can no longer decide for yourself.
