Payment dates

NZ Super and Veteran’s Pension payments for Tuesday 3 June will be available from Saturday 31 May. Note: there is now a print-friendly calendar of 2014 payment dates available on the Seniors website

Online services

These will be available as usual over the long weekend.

Our offices and Contact Centre

These will be closed on Monday 2 June 2014.

Telling us about your travel plans

If you receive NZ Super or Veteran’s Pension and intend to travel overseas for a short time, in most cases you no longer need to tell us.

We do encourage you to tell us about your travel plans if you or your partner:

  • intend to be out of New Zealand for 28 days (four weeks) or more
  • don’t know when you will return
  • intend to have more than one overseas trip in a 12 month period.

In these situations we can give you advice about what effect your trip may have on your payments.

If you don’t have a car, or are thinking about your transport options (now or in the future) there is a brochure that may be able to help.

The importance of being aware of elder abuse

Some distressing stories reported in the media recently have highlighted that elder abuse continues to happen in our communities, with many more cases going unreported.

The 15th of June every year marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It is an opportunity to find out more about the issue and where to get help if you or someone you know is at risk of neglect or abuse.

Websites where you can get more information:

Age Concern website - learn about the different forms of abuse (including physical and financial), the signs to look for and where to get help in your area. - abuse or neglect is usually by family members or caregivers. For information and support you can call the Family Violence Information Line on 0800 456 450

Consumer Affairs website - financial abuse includes targeting older people in scams. Find out about the latest scams and how to help protect you and your loved ones.

Get your macula checked - Save your sight

Macular Degeneration (MD) is a progressive eye disease affecting 1 in 7 New Zealanders over 50. The incidence increases with age. It is the leading cause of blindness and is expected to increase by 70% by 2030.

Awareness levels in NZ are low. Recent research* reveals that only 67% of New Zealanders over 50 have heard of MD, while ONLY 48% understand that MD is an eye disorder.

MD Awareness Week 26 May to 1 June aims to get everyone over 50 to have their macula checked. MDNZ will provide 10 FREE education seminars around NZ from May to November this year.
